Brazil blood services implement new criteria and address shortages

Blood donation services in Brazil are implementing new protocols and addressing critical shortages. The Hemonúcleo of Hospital de Amor has adopted updated criteria established by the Ministry of Health (Portaria GM/MS nº 11.685). These changes aim to expand the donor pool by reducing waiting periods related to medical and aesthetic procedures, medication use, and certain health conditions.

In Macaé, the Municipal Hemotherapy Service has issued an urgent appeal for O negative blood donations to replenish stocks. The service provides support to six hospitals across Macaé, Conceição de Macabu, and Carapebus. While O negative is the priority, the unit continues to accept all blood types to maintain essential services for surgeries and emergency care.
