Brazil's southern cold front brings strong winds, rain and frost
A cold front advancing from the south is set to affect much of Brazil this weekend. In the southern states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, wind gusts are forecast to reach up to 100 km/h, with rain, hail and thunderstorms expected. The system will also drive a sharp temperature drop, bringing minima near 5 °C in parts of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina and prompting frost warnings in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
Meanwhile, the interior of the country will remain under a dry air mass. Relative humidity is projected to fall to 12‑20 % across the Central‑West and parts of the Southeast, while daytime highs may climb to 37 °C in regions such as Goiás and the Triângulo Mineiro. The dry conditions raise fire‑risk concerns for the Goiânia metropolitan area and degrade air quality.
An additional “Arco de Tempestades” line of instability is expected to develop over the North‑West, bringing intense thunderstorms and winds up to 50 km/h to Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Acre and Amazonas. In Rio Grande do Sul, saturated soils from recent rains increase the risk of flooding, landslides and fallen trees.
