Brazil celebrates 36 years of the Consumer Defense Code

Brazil's Consumer Defense Code (CDC), Federal Law 8.078/1990, marks its 36th anniversary. To commemorate the milestone, Procon-JP organized social actions in the Taipa community of João Pessoa, providing legal consultancy, health services, and distributing updated copies of the code to residents.

Despite being recognized as one of the world's most advanced consumer protection systems, experts note that many Brazilians struggle to exercise their legal rights. Barriers to enforcement include excessive corporate bureaucracy, complex cancellation processes, and the vulnerability of specific groups such as the elderly and low-income individuals. Factors like social shame after falling victim to scams and the complexity of online shopping further prevent consumers from seeking the guarantees provided by the law.
