Brazil celebrates dance with festivals in Rio and Uberlândia

Rio de Janeiro marked the first official Dia da Gafieira on July 17 with a special ball at the Rio Scenarium on July 22. The event began with an open ballroom‑dance class, followed by live performances from the group Gafieirando, singer Alana Moraes and a repertoire that included samba, choro, maxixe and baião, honoring the city’s traditional dance halls.

In Uberlândia, the local shopping centre hosted free performances as part of the 32nd Festival de Dança do Triângulo on July 22‑23. The program featured ten tango couples, gypsy and flamenco dancers, as well as urban, children’s, belly‑dance, jazz and K‑pop routines, turning the food‑court area into a stage and encouraging shoppers to engage with the arts.

Both events aim to broaden public access to Brazilian dance heritage and highlight regional cultural initiatives.
