Brazil celebrates Maura Moreira and Fafá de Belém in cultural showcases

Brazilian cultural institutions are highlighting two iconic singers. Maura Moreira, recognized as the first Black Brazilian lyrical vocalist, has a retrospective of her work, including the 1970s recording "O Canto da Terra" produced under Funarte’s music preservation projects. Moreira, born in Belo Horizonte in 1933 and now residing in Germany, performed opera roles both in Brazil and across Europe.

A separate tribute, "Fafá de Belém, o Musical," marks the 50th anniversary of the Pará-born singer’s career. Backed by the Ministry of Culture and Petrobras, the production toured Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belém and São Luís, featuring actress Lucinha Lins as the lead. The musical blends theater, politics and Amazonian ecology, presenting three life stages of Fafá de Belém through songs, indigenous legends and regional choreography.
