Brazil celebrates National Radio Day honoring broadcasting pioneer
Brazil celebrates National Radio Day on September 25, honoring Edgar Roquette-Pinto, the pioneer of Brazilian broadcasting. The date was officially established by Law No. 15.101/2025.
Radio history in the country dates back to September 7, 1922, with the first experimental transmission during Independence Day celebrations. In 1923, Roquette-Pinto founded the Rádio Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro, which later became Rádio MEC. Despite technological shifts from vinyl to digital and AI, radio remains a vital medium for information and community connection, particularly in rural areas where internet access may be limited.
To mark the occasion, Rádio MEC announced the finalists for its 22nd Radio MEC Prize, featuring 48 musical works across classical, instrumental, and children's categories.
