Brazil central government records R$ 10.8 billion surplus in July
Brazil's central government recorded a primary surplus of R$ 10.8 billion in July, a significant reversal from the R$ 59.1 billion deficit reported in July 2025. This result, which excludes interest payments on public debt, was the best July performance since 2022. The surplus was driven by a 7.7% real increase in net revenue and a 20.7% real decrease in total expenses. Specifically, the National Treasury recorded a surplus of R$ 33.3 billion, while Social Security saw a R$ 22.2 billion deficit and the Central Bank recorded a R$ 302 million deficit.
Simultaneously, economic data from the Central Bank indicates rising financial strain on households. Family delinquency reached a record high of 5.8% in July, the highest level since March 2011. In the free credit market, delinquency rose to 7.8%. Additionally, the portion of monthly household income dedicated to debt servicing reached a historic peak of 28.9% in June.
