Brazil centralizes overseas passport printing at Casa da Moeda

Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has shifted the production of passports for its diplomatic missions abroad to the Casa da Moeda do Brasil. The change applies to the 11 Brazilian consulates in the United States and to embassies in Ghana and Qatar, as well as consulates‑generals in Frankfurt, Lisbon, Porto and Mexico City. Printed passports are now shipped to each post in diplomatic bags, with urgent cases still produced locally. Consul‑General Alessandro Candeas said the additional transport time will be minimal and staff at the consulates can be reallocated to faster in‑person services. The pilot, launched in Boston and New York in April, was expanded in July after positive results. The ministry emphasized that the move addresses a surge in demand, does not stem from budget limits, and will not interrupt service for Brazilian citizens abroad.
