Brazil Senate approves increased border allowance for federal employees
The Brazilian Senate has approved a conversion bill derived from Provisional Measure 1.375/2026, which significantly expands the border allowance for federal public servants. The measure increases the daily indemnity from R$ 91 to R$ 191, effective January 1, 2027.
Beyond the financial increase, the legislation broadens the scope of eligible professionals. New categories include employees from the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), the National Social Security Institute (INSS), regulatory agencies, the Superintendency of the Manaus Free Trade Zone (Suframa), and the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai). It also covers federal teachers, administrative technicians, and civil servants from former federal territories such as Amapá, Roraima, and Rondônia.
The benefit is also being extended geographically to include municipalities within the Legal Amazon, even those outside the traditional border strip, provided they are deemed strategic for combating transborder crimes. The Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services will define the specific locations. The bill now moves to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for sanction.
