Brazil Chamber Leaders Seek to Drop 10-Year Transition Clause in Work‑Hours Reform

Seven party leaders in Brazil's Chamber of Deputies signed a joint note asking President Hugo Motta to withdraw an amendment that proposes a ten‑year transition period for the reduction of the workday. The amendment, authored by Deputy Sérgio Turra, is part of the PEC 6x1 proposal that aims to make working hours more flexible across sectors and regions.

The leaders—representing PSDB‑Cidadania, PSD, Republicanos, PP, MDB, União Brasil and Podemos— argue the long transition could distort debate and hinder clear understanding of the reform. The special commission's reading of the bill, originally scheduled for 20 May, was postponed to 25 May due to lack of agreement. The Chamber continues to discuss a shorter transition window of two to five years.

The request reflects broader tensions within Brazil's legislature over the pace and scope of labor‑market reforms.
