Brazil Chamber of Deputies: 85% of members seek re-election

Approximately 85% of current members of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies are seeking re-election in 2026. Out of 513 deputies, 437 are running again, a slight decrease from the 448 who sought re-election in 2022.

While many seek to retain their seats, there is a growing trend of deputies running for different offices. The number of deputies seeking Senate seats has doubled from 21 in 2022 to 42 in 2026. Other shifts include increased candidacies for state assemblies and governorships.

Experts note that the Electoral Fund and the use of mandatory individual parliamentary amendments provide incumbents with significant advantages. These resources allow lawmakers to direct funds to local projects, strengthening their political standing in their home bases.

Data from the Superior Electoral Court also highlights significant asset growth among certain freshman deputies elected in 2022. Among those seeking re-election, Neto Carletto reported a wealth increase to R$ 34.3 million, which he attributed to an inheritance. Other notable increases were reported by Waldemar Oliveira and Duda Ramos.
