Brazil Chamber of Deputies approves elderly violence prevention policy

The Commission for the Defense of the Rights of the Elderly in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved a proposal to establish the National Policy for the Prevention of Violence against the Elderly. The legislation, reported by Deputy Weliton Prado, merges two previous bills (PL 6201/25 and PL 6346/25) into a single text.

The policy aims to integrate actions across public health (SUS), social assistance (Suas), public security, and human rights sectors. Key provisions include the creation of an early warning system to monitor potential violence and specialized training for public service professionals.

Additionally, the project institutes a free, 24-hour National Reporting Channel for violence against the elderly. The channel will feature a three-digit number, guarantee anonymity for whistleblowers, and ensure an initial response within 24 hours, supported by a multidisciplinary team. The proposal now moves to the Finance and Taxation and the Constitution and Justice commissions.
