Brazil Chamber of Deputies approves retirement rule changes for police and firefighters

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill to modify retirement rules for military police and firefighters. The proposal aims to facilitate access to full retirement benefits by reducing the required time spent in military activity from 30 to 25 years.

Under the new rules, the total service time required for full retirement would be 35 years for men and 32 years for women. Within these totals, up to 10 years of civil, public, or private service can be credited toward the requirement, provided it is documented and was not performed simultaneously with military duties. Currently, the law requires 35 years of service, with at least 30 years specifically in military roles, regardless of gender.

The rapporteur, Deputy Cabo Gilberto Silva, argued that the changes are necessary to recognize the physical and mental health impacts caused by the nature of military police and firefighting work. The bill was approved symbolically and now moves to the Federal Senate for further analysis.
