Brazilian Chamber Commission approves internship extension after graduation
The Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission (CCJ) of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill that allows university students to extend their internship contracts for up to 12 months after graduation. This extension is strictly limited to the same company where the student was already interning during their studies.
The proposal establishes a total maximum stay of two years at the same institution, though exceptions are made for people with disabilities. The internship can be conducted in person, remotely, or through a hybrid model. To prevent exploitation, the text prohibits the management of internship contracts by third-party companies and forbids the charging of administrative fees to students, educational institutions, or companies.
Relator Luiz Carlos Motta emphasized that the measure does not create a new employment category or allow graduates to sign entirely new internship agreements. Instead, it only permits the continuation of existing contracts that were valid while the student was still enrolled. Having passed in a conclusive character, the bill may now proceed to the Senate unless an appeal is filed for a vote by the Chamber's Plenary.
