Brazil Chamber of Deputies reviews multiple protection and crime bills

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies is analyzing several legislative proposals aimed at strengthening protections against violence and refining criminal definitions.

One proposal, Bill 2719/26, seeks to amend the Maria da Penha Law to ensure protection measures apply to women assaulted by ex-partners or ex-companions, even if the couple never lived together or the relationship has ended. This aims to standardize legal application following Superior Court of Justice (STJ) understandings.

Another initiative, Bill 1931/26, proposes updates to the Penal Code to specifically define stalking. The bill would include digital surveillance and persistent non-consensual contact as criminal behaviors, with increased penalties for crimes committed against vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, or women in contexts of gender violence.

Additionally, Bill 1432/26 would mandate that both public and private healthcare facilities display official reporting channels for violence, abuse, and abandonment of the elderly to encourage reporting and increase awareness.
