Brazil Chamber of Deputies to debate National Indigenous Truth Commission
The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies will host a public hearing on November 17 to discuss the creation of the National Indigenous Truth Commission (CNIV). The initiative, led by Federal Deputy Sônia Guajajara, seeks to address a decade-long demand from indigenous peoples to investigate and document state-sponsored violence committed during the military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985.
Indigenous organizations, including the Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (Apib), argue that the previous National Truth Commission (CNV) was insufficient, as its 2014 report only covered ten indigenous groups, representing roughly 3.3% of the populations identified at the time. The proposed CNIV aims to investigate a broader range of atrocities, such as enslavement, torture, rape, poisoning, forced removals from ancestral territories, and the destruction of cultural assets.
Estimates suggest that approximately 8,350 indigenous people were murdered during the dictatorship period. The upcoming hearing will include contributions from indigenous leaders, legal experts, researchers, and public officials to expand the documentation of these historical human rights violations and seek state accountability.
