Brazil climate activists release new book on women defenders and close first Climate Action Week
On 25 May, the Observatório do Clima launched the book *Mulheres que Sustentam o Clima: Defensoras Climáticas no Cuidado com a Rede da Vida* at the Museu das Favelas in São Paulo. The volume presents interviews with 26 women from Indigenous, quilombola, riverine, fishing, family‑farm, trans, travesti and peripheral communities across Brazil, documenting their roles in climate justice and community care. The publication links the testimonies to Brazil’s National Care Policy (Law 15.069/2024) and highlights gaps in legal support for traditional community leaders.
The following day, 26 May, Porto Alegre concluded its inaugural Climate Action Week with a march from Largo Zumbi dos Palmares to Parque da Redenção. The event gathered social movements, researchers, activists and public officials to demand protection of urban forests and climate justice. Amnesty International Brazil executive director Jurema Werneck called the week “a milestone in the mobilisation for climate justice,” noting persistent concerns over the transparency of reconstruction funds after the 2024 floods and criticizing large‑scale megaprojects that run contrary to nature‑based solutions.
