Brazil climate events caused R$ 455.5 billion in damages

Extreme weather events have caused R$ 455.5 billion in material damages in Brazil over the last decade, according to data presented at a workshop by the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS).

Experts noted that while Brazil has the potential to increase production with lower emissions by utilizing its renewable energy matrix, the country must improve its adaptation strategies. Currently, only 14.8% of Brazilian states have complete climate action plans, and more than half of the municipalities demonstrate low capacity for managing risks and disasters.

Maria Netto, executive director of iCS, stated that investing in adaptation reduces economic losses and improves infrastructure, public services, and quality of life.
