Brazil: CNJ investigates judge over photos with rifle
The National Council of Justice (CNJ) has opened a procedure to monitor an investigation into Roberto Apolinário de Castro, a judge at the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG). The inquiry follows the publication of Instagram photos showing the judge with a Taurus tactical carbine and ammunition on a table.
The TJMG confirmed it has initiated an internal investigation. While the National Organic Law of the Magistracy allows judges to carry weapons for self-defense, the court noted that CNJ Resolution 305/2019 regulates social media use to prevent personal exposures from compromising the institutional image of the Judiciary.
Judge Apolinário de Castro has stated that the photos were taken at his private residence and not in an institutional setting. He defended his actions by noting he is a sports shooter, the weapon is legally registered, and he possesses the necessary firearm carry permits. He maintains that the activity was within his private sphere and legal limits. The judge remains on active duty while the investigation proceeds under secrecy.
