Brazil commissions approve pau-brasil conservation and indigenous language funds

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved two distinct legislative proposals aimed at environmental and cultural preservation.

The Environment and Sustainable Development Commission approved a proposal to establish the National Pau-Brasil Conservation Policy. The bill, reported by Deputy Carlos Henrique Gaguim, seeks to balance the preservation of the species (Paubrasilia sp.) with socioeconomic development. The policy aims to provide legal certainty and traceability for the wood, from extraction to the final product, while encouraging responsible economic exploitation through licensed commercial plantations and research in biology and genetics.

Separately, the Amazon and Indigenous Peoples Commission approved a bill to create the National Linguistic Revitalization Fund. This fund is designed to provide a stable source of resources to support and strengthen Brazil's native languages. The initiative aims to finance programs for professional training, the production of educational materials, and community-led actions to ensure the transmission of indigenous knowledge and cultural identity.
