Brazil considers injectable HIV prevention for SUS

Brazil's National Commission for the Incorporation of Technologies in the SUS (Conitec) has issued a preliminary favorable recommendation for the inclusion of injectable cabotegravir into the Unified Health System (SUS). This long-acting medication, administered every two months after initial doses, aims to expand HIV prevention options rather than replace the existing oral PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis).

The Ministry of Health plans to prioritize the injectable version for highly vulnerable individuals who face social or logistical barriers to accessing or consistently using oral PrEP. While the recommendation is a significant step toward diversifying prevention strategies, definitive priority criteria and a specific timeline for availability within the public health system have not yet been established.

In local contexts such as São José dos Pinhais, PrEP services continue to be offered through specialized centers like the Nucleus for Testing and Health Counseling (Nutes). These services include individual assessments, regular testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and guidance for those at higher risk of exposure.
