Brazil basic food basket prices fall in 26 capitals

Data from Dieese and Conab indicate that the cost of the basic food basket fell in 26 of Brazil's 27 state capitals during July 2026. The decline was driven primarily by lower prices for staples such as tomatoes, potatoes, coffee, and sugar, due to increased supply and improved productivity.

Natal recorded the largest monthly decrease at 7.95%, while São Luís was the only capital to see a price increase (0.30%). Despite the monthly drop, most capitals have seen an accumulated increase in food costs throughout 2026. São Paulo remains the most expensive city for the basic basket, costing R$ 915.01.

The reduction in prices has slightly eased the financial burden on workers, with the average time required to purchase the basket decreasing compared to June. However, Dieese estimates that a minimum wage of approximately R$ 7,687.01 would be necessary to cover the basic food needs of a four-person family.
