Brazil consumer trend sees tax receipts converted to cashback
A growing consumer trend in Brazil involves converting tax receipts and purchase coupons into cashback through various mobile applications. Platforms such as Dinheiro na Nota, Méliuz, and Dinerama allow users to scan QR codes from supermarket, pharmacy, and pet shop receipts to accumulate balances redeemable via Pix or bank transfers. These companies utilize anonymized data from the coupons for market research and consumer analysis.
Expanding on this model, EcoPay has introduced a cashback program for individual consumers who purchase recyclable products from brands with recognized environmental certifications. Users upload their receipts to the EcoPay app, which automatically identifies qualifying items and converts them into credits for the EcoPay Shop.
EcoPay CEO Breno Moutinho noted that moving into the retail consumer market allows the company to identify demand patterns that may pressure brands to improve packaging recyclability. This initiative arrives amid concerns regarding greenwashing in Brazil; a recent study by Market Analysis Brasil and the Akatu Institute found that 81% of 2,098 analyzed products contained misleading environmental information.
