Brazil: Contran extends CNH validity and license applications surge

The National Traffic Council (Contran) has authorized an extension for Brazilian drivers with licenses (CNH) or Moped Driving Authorizations (ACC) that expire between June 5, 2026, and December 8, 2026. These documents will remain valid until December 9, 2026, to facilitate the transition to new national traffic laws. The extension is applied automatically through the system, requiring no additional action from drivers. Once the extension period ends, drivers have 30 days to regularize their documentation.

Despite these administrative changes, the new legislation maintains requirements for physical, mental, and psychological examinations. The law also introduces automatic renewal for drivers registered in the National Positive Driver Registry (RNPC).

Concurrently, Brazil has seen a significant surge in driver's license applications following recent regulatory changes. Between January and August 2026, 7.3 million people applied for their first CNH, a 216% increase compared to the previous year. This surge is attributed to a reduction in costs—estimated at up to 80%—and decreased bureaucracy, including digital theoretical classes and reduced practical training requirements.
