Brazil court grants custody of four indigenous siblings to uncles
Four indigenous siblings in Alto Acre have been granted provisional custody by their paternal uncles following a decision by the Civil Court of the Brasiléia district. The children had previously been placed in institutional care due to parental negligence and substance abuse issues within the family environment.
To maintain family ties, the court facilitated a transition to the uncles, who reside in a different village. The process involved video calls and communication in the indigenous language to ease the transition. The National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) managed the children's transportation, while the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) is working to integrate the family into support programs.
