Brazil court orders Apple to strengthen age controls for casino apps

A court in Brazil has ordered Apple to strengthen age verification controls within the App Store to prevent minors from downloading casino-style applications and making in-app purchases. The ruling, issued by the Court of Justice of São Paulo, follows a lawsuit filed by four organizations advocating for the rights of children and adolescents.

While the legal action specifically targets the application ‘Casino Roulette: Roulettist’, the court's decision establishes broader requirements for the Brazilian App Store. Apple has been given five days to implement measures that prevent registered minors from downloading the app and to require age verification before users can purchase virtual chips with real money.

The court determined that standard age ratings are insufficient to prevent minors from accessing gambling-style content and conducting financial transactions. Consequently, the ruling mandates that Apple introduce additional verification mechanisms at the point of purchase to ensure children and teenagers cannot acquire paid credits or features within apps featuring casino mechanics.
