Brazilian Journalist Luan Araújo Ordered Imprisoned Over Unpaid Defamation Fine

A São Paulo judge ordered the open‑regime imprisonment of journalist Luan Araújo after he failed to pay a R$ 2,216.30 indemnity imposed for a defamation conviction against former federal deputy Carla Zambelli. Araújo, who is unemployed, had been found guilty of publishing a text that described Zambelli as part of a “sect of extreme‑right patients” and other extremist language.

The decision was publicly condemned by journalism bodies including the Comissão de Jornalistas pela Igualdade Racial (Cojira‑SP) and the Comissão Nacional de Jornalistas pela Igualdade Racial (Conajira/Fenaj), which issued a statement saying they “repudiam a decisão da Justiça paulista”. Araújo himself described the punishment as “injusta” and said he feels “triste” and “desesperançoso”. He is seeking financial support to fund a moral‑damage lawsuit against Zambelli.

The case revisits a 2022 incident in which Zambelli pursued Araújo with a revolver on the streets of São Paulo. Zambelli was later sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court to five years and three months in prison for illegal weapon possession, and her request for extradition from Italy was rejected. The contrast between Zambelli’s legal outcomes and Araújo’s imprisonment has intensified debate over press freedom and judicial equity in Brazil.
