Brazil courts halt Banco do Brasil rural debt collections

A federal judge in Sena Madureira, Acre granted an urgent injunction that stops Banco do Brasil from registering a negative credit entry, protesting the title, or executing guarantees tied to a 73‑year‑old cattle farmer’s rural loan. The decision cited alleged abusive interest rates of 21.35% a year and other charges, and ordered the bank to refrain from seizing the farmer’s 310‑head herd while the case proceeds.

In Sorriso, Mato Grosso, the 1st Civil Court issued a 30‑day notice to farmer Eliseu José Schafer for a debt claim of R$ 792,650.56. The court warned that failure to pay or to respond within the allotted 15‑day period after the notice could lead to immediate asset seizure and enforcement actions. Both rulings involve Banco do Brasil’s attempts to collect on agricultural credit agreements under the BB Investe Agro program.
