Brazil: CPF irregularities may affect CNH renewal
While federal traffic regulations do not explicitly mandate the blocking of a driver's license (CNH) due to CPF irregularities, practical administrative hurdles may occur. According to the Brazilian Traffic Code and Contran Resolution No. 1.020/2025, drivers are required to be registered in the CPF system, but the law specifies registration rather than a specific regular status.
In practice, some state transit departments (Detrans) may halt services such as renewals, category changes, or duplicate issuances if the integration between transit agencies and the Receita Federal identifies inconsistencies. Common issues include a CPF status of ‘Pendente de Regularização’ (due to missing tax returns), ‘Suspenso’ (due to incorrect personal data), or ‘Cancelado’.
Drivers are advised to check their status via the Receita Federal website to avoid delays. It is also important to note that driving with an expired license for more than 30 days is a very serious infraction under the Brazilian Traffic Code, carrying fines and vehicle retention.
