Brazil crypto market faces shakeout under new central bank rules

The Brazilian cryptocurrency market is undergoing a significant regulatory shakeout due to new capital requirements and auditing procedures imposed by the Central Bank. Industry estimates suggest that of the approximately 300 virtual asset service providers (VASPs) currently operating in the country, only 20 to 25 may have the necessary structure to apply for authorization, with as few as 10 expected to ultimately secure a license.

Existing service providers have until October 30 to begin the authorization process or face a mandatory 30-day shutdown period. The new regulations include stringent prudential capital requirements, which could range from R$10.8 million to R$37.2 million (approximately $7.2 million). Beyond capital, firms must also meet rigorous standards for governance, security, auditing, and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance.

Some companies, including Bitnuvem, NovaDAX, Digitra, and Coinext, have already announced the end or restructuring of their retail operations. While some analysts view this as a natural market correction and consolidation as the sector matures, others note that the high costs of compliance and capital may restrict innovation by removing smaller players from the market.
