Brazil data centers confront surging AI power demand and reliability risks

Rapid growth of artificial‑intelligence workloads is set to reshape electricity consumption in Brazil’s data‑center sector. A Capgemini study projects that AI training and inference could climb from 25 % to about 60 % of total data‑center electricity use within the next three to five years, raising concerns over peak demand and forecasting accuracy.

Large hyperscale facilities already draw 100 MW to 500 MW, comparable to the consumption of whole cities, and must meet ultra‑high availability standards above 99.99 %. Even with redundant high‑voltage feeds, backup substations and UPS systems, utilities face operational risks such as protection‑system failures, transformer defects and power‑quality issues that can trigger costly outages. Executives highlighted the difficulty of predicting loads, the concentration of demand in specific regions, and the potential mismatch between planned capacity and actual needs.

The report also notes that AI can aid grid operators, with about 60 % of surveyed leaders expecting advanced analytics to cut failures by more than 10 % and improve operational productivity. Nonetheless, the sector must invest in expanded capacity and smarter planning to ensure reliable energy delivery for the next wave of digital growth.
