Brazil debates addictive design and screen time impacts
In Brazil, the debate over addictive design is gaining regulatory momentum as authorities address the impact of digital platforms on children and adolescents. The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) is studying new measures to enhance digital safety and prevent excessive use among young users.
Technological strategies such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, frequent notifications, and digital rewards are designed to prolong user engagement. These mechanisms can make it difficult for users to perceive time spent on screens. The ECA Digital, which came into effect in March 2026, already establishes obligations for technology companies regarding the privacy and security of young users.
Beyond regulatory concerns, excessive screen use is noted for its potential to affect social relationships, family life, and emotional well-being. While technology is essential for modern work and study, frequent digital distractions can lead to decreased eye contact, interrupted conversations, and diminished emotional presence in social settings.
