Brazil debates assistance for women with banned Essure implants

The Brazilian Human Rights Commission (CDH) recently debated the creation of a national policy to identify, monitor, and provide assistance to women who received the Essure permanent contraceptive implant. The device, which was marketed by Bayer, was banned by Anvisa in 2019 after being classified as a maximum risk due to reports of serious adverse events.

According to Bayer, 10,402 women received the implant in Brazil between 2009 and 2017. While not part of the Unified Health System (SUS) nationally, the device was purchased directly by various states and municipalities, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Pará, and others.

During a public hearing proposed by Senator Damares Alves, participants advocated for the establishment of medical care protocols, patient tracking, and reparation measures for those who suffered damages from the device.
