Brazil debates cultural funding and theater revitalisation amid criticism of Lei Rouanet

The municipal cultural secretariat in Maringá convened a meeting at the historic Cine Teatro Plaza to explore options for reviving the venue, which has been out of operation since 2009 following fire‑safety violations. Proposals discussed will be submitted to the Council of Cultural Policies in early August, aiming to restore the 610‑seat theatre that has long been a cultural landmark.

In Bahia, state culture secretary Bruno Monteiro defended the Lei Rouanet, saying it has been reduced to a "bad word" by misinformation. He highlighted that every R$1 invested in the law generates a R$4.80 return for public coffers and that cultural projects now contribute more to Brazil’s GDP than the automotive sector, supporting tourism, hospitality, transport, audiovisual production, education, health and security.

Both discussions reflect broader debates on how Brazil funds and sustains its cultural sector.
