Brazil debates expansion of Minha Casa, Minha Vida housing program

The Brazilian federal government is conducting intense discussions regarding a proposal to expand the Minha Casa, Minha Vida housing program. According to National Secretary of Housing Augusto Rabelo, the government is currently evaluating the budgetary impacts and the target demographics of the proposal.

Submitted by construction companies in late June, the proposal suggests cutting interest rates by 1 percentage point for tiers 3 and 4. Additionally, it seeks to expand tier 4 to include individuals with monthly incomes of up to R$ 21,000 and properties valued up to R$ 1.2 million. If implemented, this would represent the largest expansion of the program since its inception.

In the municipality of Imperatriz, local registration for Minha Casa, Minha Vida residential units is scheduled to begin on August 24. The process includes apartments in the Mallorca and Ibiza developments, as well as remaining houses from the Juscelino Kubitschek (JK) residential area.
