Brazil demographic shifts impact voter profiles and pension markets

Brazil is experiencing a significant demographic shift as the population ages, impacting both the political landscape and financial planning. Data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) shows that the number of voters aged 16 to 24 is projected to decrease by 22% between 2010 and 2026, falling from 24.7 million to 19.2 million. While the total electorate grew by 17% during this period, the youth share of the voting population dropped from 18.2% to 12.5%.

In contrast, the number of elderly voters (60+) has grown by approximately 74% since 2010, now totaling over 36.8 million. This shift highlights the increasing strategic importance of older demographics in national elections.

Parallel to these political changes, rising life expectancy in Brazil—now 76.6 years according to IBGE—is driving growth in the private pension market. Investment in private pensions rose from R$ 1.06 trillion in January 2024 to R$ 1.63 trillion in May 2026, a 54.5% increase, as citizens seek to maintain autonomy and income during longer retirement periods.
