Brazil denies visas to US officials amid election system dispute

Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected visa applications from U.S. State Department officials Riley Barnes, deputy assistant secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, and Samuel Samson, deputy assistant secretary, after they expressed interest in meeting Brazilian election authorities. The government said allowing the visit could be interpreted as political interference during the pre‑election period for the October presidential race.

Following the denial, Brazil's Superior Electoral Court announced a diplomatic briefing on 17 August at the Supreme Court. The session will involve ambassadors from multiple countries and will explain how Brazil’s electronic voting machines operate, their security measures, and mark the 30‑year anniversary of their use. The meeting is intended to counter external doubts, including recent claims by a presidential candidate that the machines were linked to Venezuela's Smartmatic, which the court has refuted.
