Brazil deploys National Force to Belo Monte region
The Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security has authorized the National Force of Public Security to operate in the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant region in Pará for a period of 90 days. The temporary measure, established via Ordinance No. 1.321/2026, aims to support federal and state public security agencies in preserving public order and protecting people and property.
The operation will be coordinated by the Federal Police in conjunction with Pará's public security organs. The specific number of agents will be determined by the National Directorate of the National Force, while the requesting agency will provide necessary logistical support and infrastructure.
The deployment comes as the Belo Monte plant marks a decade since its official inauguration. The project has faced long-standing international scrutiny regarding its impact on the Xingu River. In response to the plant's anniversary, various environmental and indigenous organizations, including Aida, Cimi, and Coiab, issued an open letter highlighting increased violations against indigenous, riverside, and artisanal fishing communities in the region.
