Cuiabá authorities conduct demolitions in irregular occupation areas

The City Hall of Cuiabá and the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso (MPMT) are coordinating actions to combat irregular occupations in environmental preservation areas, specifically within the Senador Jonas Pinheiro and Residencial Ilza Therezinha Picoli Pagot allotments. These areas are classified as high-risk by Civil Defense and contain permanent preservation areas (APP) with water springs.

Recent enforcement operations resulted in the demolition of several uninhabited structures, including 19 buildings in a single recent action. While municipal authorities state the demolitions targeted unoccupied constructions to protect public assets and the environment, local residents and state deputy Wilson Santos have raised concerns regarding the impact on vulnerable families. Some reports indicate that the actions, occurring in the Vale do Sonho region, have caused significant distress among residents, including immigrants, with claims of insufficient prior notification.

In a broader context, the Brazilian Ministry of Cities is developing the National Housing Plan (PLANHAB 2040) to address a national housing deficit of 35 million units. This new strategy aims to improve urban management, address precarious settlements, and adapt to demographic shifts and climate change.
