Brazil discusses climate insurance protection and public security participation

Experts at the second edition of the Forum Mário Petrelli discussions addressed strategies to expand insurance protection in Brazil against extreme climate events. Marco Antônio Gonçalves noted a significant gap in coverage following the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul tragedy, where losses exceeded R$ 89 billion while insurance covered only R$ 6 billion. Discussions included the potential for parametric insurance and catastrophe bonds, citing Mexico’s successful model of transferring earthquake and hurricane risks to capital markets.

In Fortaleza, the 1st Popular Conference on Public Security (CONSEP BR) convened civil society organizations and community representatives from across Brazil. The event aims to integrate the voices of those living in favelas and peripheries into the formulation of democratic public security policies, emphasizing that effective security requires popular participation and the protection of rights.
