Brazil energy authorities implement contingency plans for elections and El Niño

Brazilian energy authorities are implementing contingency measures to ensure electricity supply during upcoming elections, despite the predicted impact of a 'super El Niño' phenomenon. Sandoval Feitosa, Director-General of Aneel, stated that while there is no immediate risk to the electoral process, preventive actions are being taken. This includes advancing fuel resources for isolated generators in the North to mitigate potential navigation difficulties caused by changing river levels.

The National Electric System Operator (ONS) is also preparing special operations to maintain grid security. Marcio Rea, Director-General of ONS, noted a higher possibility of activating emergency plans for energy surplus management in the second half of the year.

Climatic challenges are already evident across Brazil. Drought areas have expanded in states like Maranhão and Roraima, with Roraima seeing affected territory rise from 7% to 50% in a single month. Additionally, Maranhão has seen a 54% increase in power interruptions caused by wildfires between 2024 and 2025, placing it fourth in the national ranking for such incidents.
