Brazil E32 gasoline blend poses minimal risk to modern engines
Experts state that the increase of ethanol content in gasoline to 32% (E32) will have minimal impact on modern engines, contrary to concerns circulating on social media regarding potential engine corrosion.
Technical analysis indicates that the anhydrous ethanol used in the E32 blend lacks water, serving as an anti-detonant agent to increase octane levels. This differs from hydrated ethanol found at pumps, which contains 4% to 5% water. The primary risk to engines, particularly older models with carburetors or those lacking modern electronic injection, stems from fuel adulteration where hydrated ethanol is used illegally, introducing unwanted water into the system.
Most vehicles sold in Brazil since 1997 utilize lambda sensors to adjust electronic injection, allowing them to adapt to stoichiometric variations. Experts note the difference between the previous E22 and the new E32 is less than 5%, meaning the main impact will likely be on fuel consumption rather than mechanical integrity. Manufacturers such as Chevrolet and GWM have confirmed that their monocombustible models are prepared for the new blend.
