Brazil: Economic and productivity impacts of holidays
The impact of holidays in Brazil presents a complex balance between economic loss and social well-being. According to the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), the retail sector has accumulated losses of approximately R$ 28.99 billion due to long holiday periods. Some specialists suggest that each holiday can lead to a 0.12% contraction in the GDP, depending on the specific sector and location.
Conversely, the tourism sector benefits from these dates. The Ministry of Tourism notes that holidays such as Carnival and September 7th stimulate local economies, particularly in tourist-oriented cities, benefiting restaurants, hotels, and small entrepreneurs.
Regarding workplace productivity, a study by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) indicates that 40% of professionals report a drop in productivity following long holidays, with 25% experiencing difficulty concentrating in the following week.
On an individual level, professionals often struggle to separate work from leisure during breaks. Common organizational failures, such as failing to communicate unavailability or compulsively checking emails, can transform rest periods into sources of anxiety and disguised labor.
