Brazil economic growth and social welfare policies spark political debate

Economic indicators and social welfare policies are central to the political discourse in Brazil. Economist Juliane Furno highlights improvements in the Brazilian economy under the Lula administration, noting a record low unemployment rate of 5.2% and a 34% increase in average income between 2022 and 2025, driven by formal employment and minimum wage valorization.

In contrast, political tensions are rising regarding social spending. Luiz Carlos Hauly, economic advisor to presidential candidate Augusto Cury, criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for adjusting the Bolsa Família program shortly before elections, labeling the move as “politiqueira” (politicking). Hauly argued that such actions are intended to influence voters and suggested that a Cury administration would focus on fiscal efficiency, debt renegotiation, and reducing public spending to reach a near-zero deficit.
