Brazil industrial production falls 0.6% in August

Brazilian industrial production fell by 0.6% in August compared to July, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This decline follows a slight increase of 0.1% in July and marks a period of volatility for the sector. Over the last four months, industrial production has seen a cumulative contraction of 3.1%, partially offsetting the 4.3% growth recorded during the first four months of the year.

IBGE researcher André Macedo attributed the loss of momentum to restrictive monetary policy. Despite recent interest rate cuts, high Selic rates continue to impact the economy by increasing default rates for both companies and families, limiting disposable income, and causing corporations to postpone investment decisions. While the labor market remains resilient with record employment levels, these financial pressures act as a brake on industrial demand.

Among the 25 industrial branches surveyed, 16 reported declines. Significant drops were noted in tobacco products (-23.4%), pharmaceutical and medico-chemical products (-5.5%), and extractive industries (-0.7%). Conversely, food products (+1.0%), diverse products (+8.4%), chemicals (+0.9%), and metallurgy (+0.8%) showed growth. All major economic categories, including capital goods, intermediate goods, and consumer goods, experienced declines in August.
