Brazil economy sees Selic rate cut and energy sector shifts

Brazil is experiencing significant shifts across its financial and energy sectors. The Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) has reduced the Selic rate from 14% to 13.75% per year, marking the first time this year the rate has entered the 13% range. While the committee noted that inflation remains pressured by demand, the cut is intended to align with long-term inflation targets for 2027.

In the energy sector, there is a notable rise in electromobility. The Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE) has revised its 2026 sales projections upward, estimating that electrified vehicle sales could exceed 400,000 units. This growth is driving increased demand for electricity, leading to a greater interest in solar energy as a way to offset charging costs.

Additionally, energy companies are expanding into the carbon credit market. As Brazil develops its regulated carbon market (SBCE), firms like Auren Energia and Axia Energia are leveraging renewable energy assets to sell credits globally. The Brazilian electricity market is also undergoing structural changes, with a growing emphasis on the free energy market, risk management, and the need for increased technical governance.
