Brazil education: debates over school management and assessment changes
Educational policies and administrative changes are facing scrutiny in different Brazilian regions. In Epitaciolândia, a public hearing was held to discuss Supplementary Bill No. 024/2026. The proposal seeks to amend existing legislation regarding the election of school managers, potentially allowing for a third consecutive term if specific performance criteria, such as IDEB scores, are met. Some local officials have expressed concerns that allowing management to extend up to 12 years could impact the physical and mental health of professionals.
In the Distrito Federal, the Education and Culture Commission of the Legislative Chamber has questioned the sudden advancement of third-quarter assessments for high school students. The change, linked to the High School Learning Monitoring Plan (Paaem), was communicated mid-semester, prompting concerns from teachers and lawmakers. Critics argue that the shift disregards established pedagogical planning and may negatively affect student learning and performance due to the reduced timeframe for study and consolidation of knowledge.
