Brazil education policy takes center stage in 2026 elections

Education has emerged as a central theme in Brazil's 2026 electoral debates, with candidates proposing different models for the future of public schools. Presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva advocates for the expansion of full-time education to increase learning opportunities and reduce inequalities. In contrast, Flávio Bolsonaro has presented proposals focused on strengthening military school models.

A Datafolha survey of over 5,000 public school students reveals that 25% of high schoolers expect incoming governors to prioritize teaching and learning quality. Key student concerns include teacher training, reducing teacher absenteeism, more dynamic lessons, and improved school infrastructure. The survey also highlights challenges such as subject shortages, with 66% of high school students reporting periods without teachers for certain disciplines.

Experts, including Gabriel Corrêa from Todos Pela Educação, emphasize that learning opportunities remain the top expectation for students. However, implementing full-time schooling requires significant planning regarding nutrition, qualified professionals, and pedagogical quality to ensure academic improvements.
