Brazil elderly rights and BPC benefit guidelines

In Brazil, citizens reaching the age of 65 are entitled to various legal guarantees and social assistance benefits designed to ensure dignity and social protection. A primary pillar of this support is the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (BPC), a social assistance policy aimed at low-income elderly individuals.

Unlike traditional pensions managed by the INSS, the BPC does not require prior labor contributions. To qualify for the monthly payment of one minimum wage, applicants must demonstrate that their per capita family income is less than one-quarter of the current minimum wage. It is important to note that the BPC is not a retirement pension; therefore, it does not include a thirteenth-month salary or survivor pensions for heirs. The application process requires an updated registration in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico).
