Brazil election: Viral image of girl with Constitution sparks debate
A photograph of a young girl dressed in white holding up the Brazilian Constitution has gone viral during a political rally for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the Alecrim neighborhood of Natal. The image has become a focal point in social media discussions, where it is being contrasted with a video from Parnamirim involving a 9-year-old boy holding objects resembling weapons during a mobilization associated with supporters of Flávio Bolsonaro.
The symbolic contrast has entered the second-round presidential election debate. The use of the Constitution imagery follows statements by Flávio Bolsonaro regarding potential constitutional changes to “redemocratize the country,” a claim his campaign later clarified referred to judicial reforms and ending reelection.
Regarding the incident in Parnamirim, the child's mother informed the Guardianship Council that the object was a toy weapon and that she was unaware her son was attending the political event. Local authorities in Rio Grande do Norte are investigating the Parnamirim case.
